The Best Comedone Extractor Tools for Blackheads & Whiteheads Removal
“Blackheads are the worst,” Sarah mumbled sadly as she and her best friend, Brittany, stared into Sarah’s vanity mirror.
Brittany smiled. “I know, right? They’re the absolute worst! I used to have a huge problem with them and whiteheads too. But then I found my secret weapon…”
Sarah’s eyes widened as she grabbed her friend’s shoulder. “Come on! You’ve got to tell me! I have to get rid of these blackheads!”
Brittany laughed and shrugged Sarah’s hand off her shoulder. “Chill Brit, of course I’ll tell you. It’s called a comedone extractor and it removes blackheads and whiteheads. It is an excellent blackhead remover, so it should help with your problem.”
Sarah raised an eyebrow. “So, what exactly is a comedone extractor and how do you use it?”
What is a Comedone Extractor?
A comedone extractor is a tool used to remove impurities on the skin such as blackheads, pimples, and whiteheads. Comedone extractors are very useful tools because they can remove toxins from the skin without causing any significant damage.
Comedone extractors are also very easily accessible as they are sold in drug stores and beauty stores.
However, it is very important to note that if a comedone extractor is used incorrectly it can cause permanent damage to your skin.
How to Use a Comedone Extractor
- Make sure the comedone extractor is clean
When you use a comedone extractor, there will be a small opening that forms on your skin where the blackheads and whiteheads come out. If the comedone extractor is not sterile, you may invite bacteria to grow into your skin. If that happens, your breakout will get even worse. To properly clean a comedone extractor all you have to do is soak the extractor in rubbing alcohol for one minute.
Some other good ideas to keep in mind would be to keep the rubbing alcohol on hand to continue cleaning it as you work. Also be sure to keep your hands clean as you work, so the bacteria stays away from your face. Wearing latex gloves is also a good idea.
- Be sure to position the comedone extractor properly.
The comedone extractor will have a loop on one end of it. Position the loop around your whitehead or blackhead that you are trying to get rid of. If you are having trouble seeing what you are doing try using a magnifying mirror. Be sure to work in a well lit room as well.
- Press down firmly, but be sure to be gentle.
Once your whitehead or blackhead is in the comedone extractor’s loop, you will have to apply enough pressure to force the impurity up out of your skin. Press against the base of the whitehead or blackhead from all sides. Blackheads and whiteheads are able to get deep down into your skin, so it is completely normal to have to use the comedown extractor more than once on a single blackhead or whitehead. Keep pressing the impurity at different angles until no more extra gunk comes out of your skin.
When you’re sure that you have the whole blackhead or whitehead, swipe the extractor loop over the impurity to remove it from your skin. Be sure to wash the comedone extractor once you are finished with it.
- Always remember to re-sterilize the comedone extractor every time you use it
Every time you plan to use the comedone extractor on a blackhead or whitehead, you must re-sterilize the comedone extractor. Even if you plan to get rid of all your blackheads and whiteheads in one session. Just soak the comedone extractor in rubbing alcohol for one minute after each blackhead and whitehead is extracted. It does sound time consuming, but it will save you from a lot of breakouts in the future.
- Always protect your pores after using the comedown extractor
When you remove blackheads and whiteheads, using a comedown extractor, from your pores, you leave an open “wound” in your skin. Don’t worry. It is not very noticeable, however, it will take a while for the hole to completely close up. Apply a small amount of astringent (witch hazel may be a good idea for those who are easily irritated by alcohol) to the wound to protect it from those nasty bacteria that can cause more breakouts. You should also moisturize your face after applying the astringent or witch hazel in order to keep your face from drying out. You should also not put make up on your skin once you’ve treated it with astringent or witch hazel.
Brittany smiled as Sarah just finished soaking the comedone extractor in some rubbing alcohol. “Remember, always soak the comedone extractor in rubbing alcohol after every blackhead or whitehead you remove.”
Sarah wrinkled her face as she starting drying the comedone extractor with a small hand towel. “I know. It’s just so time consuming.”
Brittany nodded. “Yes, I know. But it’s much better than getting more breakouts from bacteria.”
Brittany watched as Sarah starting using the comedone extractor on her face again. “And remember to use the comedone extractor exactly as I showed you.”
Sarah didn’t speak again until the comedone extractor was once again soaking in the alcohol. “Yes, because if I am not careful I could damage my skin.”
“Exactly. And we wouldn’t want that.”
“No, we wouldn’t.”
Brittany waited patiently as Sarah was finishing up the last of the impurities on her face. Once she was done and the comedone extractor was soaking in the rubbing alcohol for the final time, Brittany handed Sarah the astringent.
“It is extremely important that you put astringent on all the open holes once you’re done. This protects the open wounds from getting any bacteria in them.”
“Got ya,” Sarah replied as she starting putting on the astringent.
Brittany crossed her arms and grinned. “Okay smarty pants, what do you do after the astringent?”
Sarah grinned back at her best friend. “That’s easy! Moisturize!”
Brittany laughed and got up to retrieve Sarah’s moisturizer from her bathroom. “The student has surpassed the teacher. But I bet you’re still glad I taught you about the comedone extractor.”
Sarah put down the astringent bottle and took the moisturizer that Brittany handed to her. “You bet I am! No more blackheads!”
“And whiteheads,” Brittany added.
“Yep. And whiteheads. The comedone extractor is a perfect blackhead and whitehead remover.”
Brittany nodded and joined Sarah at the vanity mirror once again just as when they first started talking about Britany’s favorite beauty tool. “I told you it was my secret weapon.”
